Load shedding after sunset is why homes across Pakistan now add storage to their solar. A lithium ion battery stores the spare energy your panels make by day and releases it when the grid goes off. This guide covers types, sizes, prices and backup time.

What Is a Lithium Ion Battery?

A lithium ion battery is a rechargeable battery that moves lithium ions between two electrodes to store and release electricity. Almost every home solar pack in Pakistan uses LiFePO4 cells controlled by a smart BMS (battery management system) that cuts power before overcharge or overheating. Compared with lead acid, lithium charges faster, discharges deeper and needs no water topping. Our solar battery guide for Pakistan compares lithium, tubular and dry batteries.

LiFePO4 Battery vs Other Lithium Batteries

A LiFePO4 battery, also called a lithium iron phosphate or LFP battery, is a lithium ion battery that uses iron phosphate in its cathode. It is the standard for solar storage because it stays stable in Pakistani summer heat and most models are rated for around 6,000 cycles. Lithium ferro phosphate and iron phosphate battery are other names for the same chemistry. Nickel based lithium cells are lighter, so phones and electric cars use them instead.

12V Lithium Battery for UPS and Small Setups

A 12V lithium battery, labelled 12.8V, suits a UPS, a few fans and lights or a small DC solar kit. A 12.8V 100Ah pack stores 1.28kWh, and you can safely use about 90 percent of it. The Jolta JB121200N 12V lithium battery is a popular 100Ah choice. 50Ah packs exist, but 100Ah gives better value per kWh. Charging straight from panels? Add an MPPT solar charge controller.

24V Lithium Battery for 3kW Inverters

A 24V lithium battery, sold as 25.6V 100Ah, holds 2.56kWh and is the usual match for 2.5kW to 3.5kW inverters that run on a 24V bank. Options include the Knox Power Wall 3.0 24V lithium battery, the Knox Power Wall 3.1 and the Jolta Nova rack mount pack.

48V Lithium Ion Battery for Hybrid Solar

A 48V lithium ion battery, labelled 51.2V, is the standard for 4kW to 12kW hybrid inverters. A 51.2V 100Ah unit stores about 5kWh, the size most people mean by a 5kW lithium battery. Options include the Knox Power Wall 6.0 48V lithium ion battery, the BYD Battery Box LV5.0+ LiFePO4 battery and the GoodWe Lynx A G3. For larger homes, a 51.2V 200Ah lithium battery such as the Knox Rack Wall 10.5 stores 10.24kWh in one unit. Make sure it communicates with your hybrid solar inverter.

Lithium costs more upfront than lead acid but far less per stored unit over its life. Prices move with the dollar rate, so see our full lithium battery price in Pakistan list for today's rates and our solar inverter price in Pakistan guide to budget the full system.

How Long Does a Lithium Solar Battery Last?

Backup time is roughly battery kWh × 0.9 ÷ load in kW. In practice:

• 1.28kWh 12V battery running 200W of fans and lights: about 5.5 hours

• 2.56kWh 24V battery running a 500W load: about 4.5 hours

• 5.12kWh 48V battery running a 1kW load: about 4.5 hours

• 10.24kWh 48V battery running a 1.5kW load: about 6 hours

On lifespan, 6,000 cycles at one cycle a day means over 15 years on paper. Keep the battery shaded and ventilated to get close to that.

Lithium Car Battery and Loose Lithium Cells

A lithium car battery needs high cranking current and a matching charging system, so a solar LiFePO4 pack is not a direct swap for a car starter battery. Loose lithium cells for DIY packs carry a fire risk without a matched BMS, so a complete pack with warranty is safer for home backup.

How to Choose the Best Lithium Battery

• Match voltage to your inverter: 12V, 24V or 48V.

• Size the kWh to your night load and the hours you need.

• Check cycle rating and warranty in writing.

• Confirm BMS communication with your inverter brand.

• Choose IP65 for dusty walls, IP20 for indoor rooms.

• Fit a correctly rated DC circuit breaker between battery and inverter.

Lithium Battery FAQs

What is the 200Ah lithium battery price in Pakistan?

A 51.2V 200Ah (10.24kWh) pack starts from around Rs 475,000 on Alladin Store.

Is an iron air battery available in Pakistan?

Not for homes yet. Iron air batteries are built for utility grid storage, so LiFePO4 remains the practical home choice.

Can I mix lithium with my old lead acid battery?

No. They charge at different voltages, so mixing them shortens the life of both.
